What Are Breathable Diapers? Understanding Diaper Breathability

4 min read

Breathability is an important feature to understand when choosing a baby diaper, but it is different from absorbency. A diaper needs to absorb and retain liquid while also providing a comfortable environment around the diaper-covered skin.

So, what does it mean when a diaper is described as breathable, and how is breathability different from absorption? Here is a simple explanation.

What Does Diaper Breathability Mean?

In a breathable diaper, specially designed materials can allow water vapour to pass through parts of the diaper construction while helping prevent liquid from passing through the outer layer.

This is different from making holes that allow liquid to escape. Breathable diaper materials are designed to provide a degree of vapour transmission while the diaper continues to perform its primary function of containing absorbed liquid.

How Does a Breathable Diaper Work?

A disposable diaper is made from several layers, and each layer has a different function. The inner layer is positioned next to the baby's skin, while the absorbent core is designed to acquire and retain liquid. The outer portion of the diaper helps provide containment.

In diapers designed with breathable materials, portions of the diaper construction can permit water vapour to move through the material. This can help reduce the degree of moisture and occlusion inside the diaper compared with a less breathable construction.

Is Breathability the Same as Absorbency?

No. Breathability and absorbency describe different aspects of diaper performance.

Absorbency refers to the diaper's ability to take in and retain liquid. Modern disposable diapers commonly use an absorbent core containing materials such as cellulose pulp and superabsorbent polymer (SAP) to help capture and retain liquid.

Breathability relates to the ability of the diaper construction to permit water vapour transmission through suitable parts of the diaper.

A well-designed diaper therefore needs to balance several functions, including absorption, liquid retention, leakage protection, fit and breathability.

Why Is Moisture Management Important in a Baby Diaper?

Keeping the diaper-covered skin from remaining excessively wet is an important part of diaper care. Research has shown that prolonged wetness and excessive skin hydration can contribute to an environment in which skin becomes more susceptible to irritation.

Absorbent materials help move and retain liquid away from the skin, while breathable diaper materials can contribute to moisture-vapour management. These are complementary functions rather than the same feature.

Do Breathable Diapers Prevent Diaper Rash?

Breathability should not be treated as a guarantee against diaper rash. Diaper rash can have several causes, including prolonged contact with urine or stool, friction, sensitivity to certain products and some infections.

Studies have found benefits associated with breathable disposable diaper designs, but good diaper-changing practices remain important. Check your baby's diaper regularly, change wet or soiled diapers promptly, clean the diaper area gently and make sure the diaper fits appropriately.

Does Diaper Fit Matter?

Yes. Breathability is only one part of overall diaper comfort and performance. A diaper that is excessively tight may increase rubbing against the skin, while a diaper that is too large may not sit securely and can increase the possibility of leakage.

Baby weight provides a useful starting point for choosing a diaper size, but actual fit around the waist, thighs and crotch should also be checked.

What Should Parents Look for in a Baby Diaper?

Rather than judging a diaper by one feature alone, consider how its different features work together. Useful factors to consider include:

  • Appropriate size and fit
  • Absorption and liquid retention
  • Protection against leakage
  • Breathable construction
  • Softness of materials in contact with the skin
  • Ease of changing and everyday use

Understanding these features can help parents make a more informed choice based on their baby's size, stage and individual needs.

Breathability Is One Part of Diaper Design

A breathable diaper is designed to allow a degree of water-vapour transmission while continuing to contain absorbed liquid. It should not be confused with absorbency, and breathability alone does not determine whether a diaper is suitable for a particular baby.

Fit, absorbency, changing frequency and overall diaper construction all contribute to the diapering experience.
